Feminism, and the growing movement of female empowerment really became a hot topic last year in the world of fashion. This was mainly because of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first collection for Dior SS17, and one of her most talked about designs the “We Should All Be Feminists” t-shirt inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s essay and TEDx talk; also titled “We Should All Be Feminists”. As a result the high-street responded with their own variations feminist slogan t-shirts. One of the most popular being Top Shop’s “Females of the Future” t-shirt, which retails for a fraction of the price of Dior’s.
In my opinion feminism isn’t about putting one gender above the other, this is a major misconception; but rather the campaign for gender equality in a patriarchal society. Arguably, if you’re not for feminism, then you are for sexism by definition. Working in the digital marketing industry, across technical SEO and Content Marketing, I’ve had personal experience of how sexism is still an issue. Despite becoming senior in the field and consulting large brands across fashion and travel, I still experience mansplaining. Especially when it comes to tech, as it’s still a male dominated field.
The movement of female empowerment, and the campaign for gender equality has become important for me the more senior I’ve become. This is why me and my friends do things like ‘Squad Goals’, to motivate and inspire each other. Fashion’s response to the female movement, with the slogan t-shirts is a statement in its self. Slogans on plain box t-shirts are straight to the point without the distraction of elaborate designs, fancy fabrics and silhouettes. Therefore making it a loud statement. As females it’s important that we stand by each other and support each other on our road to success, and gender equality.
Feminism & Slogan Tee’s & Rock on Ruby
Female empowerment as I previously mentioned is so important in today’s society. It should be our duty to empower each other on a daily basis. I was recently introduced to the brand Rock on Ruby by a blogger friend. They are a lifestyle brand that make positive and empowering slogan t-shirts, with a touch of sass. They also have a customisation service, where you can create your own slogan, and have it printed on a t-shirt. So if you have personal statement to make, you can get it printed on a t-shirt. I’ve also been a lover of slogan tee’s and styled one in one of my early posts on the blog called ‘The Midi Skirt & Slogan Tee’.
I chose to customise a pink t-shirt with the slogan “Highly Favoured”, inspired by my faith and the belief and confidence I have in myself. ‘Favoured’ means to be preferred or recommended, which is a principle I apply to my day-to-day with everything I do. To be preferred or recommended means that your work and your efforts are inspiring, commendable and desirable. I try and make sure everything I do, I do with excellence and this always pays off. One thing I pray for is for divine favour, where open doors and opportunity come my way, when it seems out of reach. My statement in my slogan is a reflection of my character and how I empower myself, as well as my friends.
I chose to style my t-shirt with cropped denim jeans, and my Top Shop statement shoes which everyone loves! The colour pink being a big trend for spring summer, I decided to experiment wearing different shades of pink which compliment each other. I hope you enjoyed today’s post, and let me know which feminist inspired t-shirts have been your favourite!
